Dwarves

While dwarves can be found almost anywhere on Shalomar, most reside in the traditional dwarven homeland of Glum. Those who live away from Glum still pledge allegiance to the dwarven homeland or claim membership in a clan associated with Glum. The second largest community of dwarves is found in Sheene. Over the years, Sheenois dwarves have grown apart from Glummish dwarves, both physically and culturally. They have continued to maintain friendly trade and family connections, but recent tensions have put a great strain on their relationship.

Glummish Dwarves

Glummish dwarves tend to be stouter and slightly shorter than their Sheenois cousins, likely due to their more limited diet, which still primarily consists of goat, mushrooms, and cave apples despite increasing imports from Sheene and Dufur. A Glummish dwarf complexion tends toward pallid due to the long amount of time spent in underground cities.

More important than allegiance to Glum is a Glummish dwarf’s allegiance to his or her clan. A Glummish dwarf belongs to the clan of his or her father throughout life. Marriage bestows honorary clan membership on both of the betrothed but does not take precedence over the birth clan. Glummish dwarves display their clan allegiance in a number of different ways from prominently displaying of their clan symbol to wearing their beard in a specific fashion.

Sheenois Dwarves

All dwarves of Shalomar can trace their ancestry to Glum but not all dwarves feel they owe any allegiance to the homeland. Most dwarves found outside of Glum, coexisting with humans, elves, and other races, can trace a more recent ancestry to Sheene. They tend to be taller with a rosier complexion than Glummish dwarves. Glummish dwarves often refer to all dwarves not born in Glum as “Sheenois dwarves.”

Family clans are important for Sheenois dwarves but don’t come close to approaching the devotion a Glummish dwarf has for his clan. A Sheenois dwarf is equally likely to owe allegence to her city, church, or employer. They usually don’t prominently display their clan on their clothing and beard styles hold no significance for a Sheenois dwarf. At most, a clan will favor one color of clothing over another.

Dwarven Spirits

Nearly every dwarven clan brews their own signature beer under the supervision of a the clan’s designated Brewmaster and a few clans also run distilleries which produce all manner of harder drinks. The dwarven beers are used for weddings, wakes, and as gifts to other clans. While there is a niche group of dwarves and others who spend a great amount of time and money acquiring obscure dwarven beers, most brews do not see wide distribution. However, the larger dwarven merchant clans have carved out a reputation for themselves as producers of high-quality beer that is found throughout Shalomar.

Major Dwarven Brews
  • Grolsch Beer: The largest and most powerful dwarven House is also the largest producer of beer. While they produce many different varieties of beer, their signature brew is a dark lager. Every year during the Election Festival a special brew is introduced to great fanfare. Grolsch beer is mostly made in a brewery a few miles north of Sheene but the Grolsch clan prefers to let people think it comes from Glum. House Grolsch brews a much stronger variety of beer specifically for Glum in Glum.
  • Valin Cider: Technically not a beer, Valin Cider is made from cave apples. No other clan has come close to being able to make a drink out of the signature dwarven food. Not surprisingly, while it is popular inside of Glum, Valin Cider is rarely seen elsewhere.
